Ramirez Statement on Congress Certification of Presidential Results
Washington, DC — Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement after voting to certify the Presidential election results on the four-year anniversary of the deadly January 6 insurrection.
"Democracy is a work in progress. It’s not perfect by any means. But it is worth protecting and perfecting. That belief leads me to fulfill my constitutional duty as the Congresswoman of Illinois’ Third Congressional district, certifying the Presidential election and ensuring a peaceful transfer of power. The willingness of elected officials to uphold the results of EVERY FAIR election and to facilitate a peaceful transition are cornerstones of our democracy.
As we reflect on what January 6th means for our nation, we must learn from the past as we commit to protect and perfect our democratic institutions and shared future. I know that today is a day of grief, disappointment, fear, and trauma for many Americans. We face an uncertain future, given that Donald Trump is responsible for inciting an insurrection just four years ago, and his administration has promised retribution against all those who have stood in his way.
But this is not 2020. We have prepared. We will resist. We must protect our democracy and our communities from what Donald Trump, right-wing extremists, and their billionaire bosses have planned. And we must continue to perfect our democracy so that it is truly accessible, inclusive, and representative of the beautiful diversity of our nation. Together, we will stand against the inhumanity they have promised and will fight for the democracy and future we deserve.”
