Ramirez Statement on Chicago City Council Vote to Protect Welcoming City Status

December 14, 2023

Chicago, IL —  Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement after Chicago's City Council voted 31-16 against efforts to dismantle the Welcoming City Ordinance:

“Chicago is clear. Illinois Third Congressional district is clear. We remain a welcoming city for migrants looking for asylum, a sanctuary city for those in need of refuge. I applaud my alderperson Jessie Fuentes and every alderperson who stood strong in the defense of the values of our city, the same values that provided my family a home and a chance at a better life. As we continue our work to bring federal resources to our communities providing life-saving refuge and services for asylum seekers, we must continue to reject policies of division. In the richest nation of the world, we can provide refuge for new arrivals, deliver relief for those who have been waiting for decades, and respond to the needs of every member of our communities.”
