Congresswoman Ramirez's Bill to Restore GI Bill Benefits to Defrauded Student Veterans Advances within Veterans Affairs Committee

April 18, 2023

For Immediate Release

Washington, D.C. - This week, Members of the House Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity unanimously voted to advance the Student Veteran Benefit Restoration Act (H.R. 1767), which Congresswoman Delia Ramirez (IL-03) introduced earlier this year in order to establish an across the board process for student veterans to restore their GI Bill education benefits in qualifying instances, such as when a student veteran has been defrauded by an educational institution.

“Today’s advancement of the Student Veteran Benefit Restoration Act reflects years of advocacy led by the student veteran community on the issue of protecting our veterans from predatory schemes that rob them of the GI Bill education benefits,” said Congresswoman Delia Ramirez (IL-03).  “Our veterans have rightfully earned those benefits and they should rightfully be restored when bad actors have targeted vets to make a profit off them. The support and collaboration of Veterans for Education Success, Student Veterans of America, and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle speaks to our shared commitment to move the needle in the right direction for our veterans.”

The Student Veteran Benefit Restoration Act now advances to the full Committee of Veterans Affairs for further consideration. Bill text can be accessed here.
