Congresswoman Ramirez Statement on Trump’s Dangerous Trillion Dollar Funding Freeze

January 28, 2025

Chicago, IL — Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03), founder of the Congressional Caucus on Global Migration, released the following statement on the Trump Administration’s federal funding freeze that could affect trillions of dollars and cause widespread disruption in health care research, education programs, translation services, climate and infrastructure improvements, global economic development, and other initiatives. Grants that have been awarded but not spent are also frozen.

“This irresponsible, dangerous funding freeze makes it clear that the Trump Administration doesn’t care about working families and vulnerable people. People who care about Americans' health, well-being, and safety don’t freeze funding for critical services and research.

Republicans have been paving the way for their extreme, authoritarian Project 2025 agenda. Freezing funds for everything from domestic grants to foreign assistance is a deliberate attempt to defund and dismantle civil society, erode our democratic institutions, destabilize our communities, and endanger our global relationships.

In the United States, we believe in a democracy of checks and balances, not a government of wanna-be dictators serving their billionaire bosses. It is time for Congress to see their plan for what it is: an attempt at authoritarian control. Let’s not be deceived. Trump and his allies do not respect our democratic institutions. Americans expect us not to be complicit; Democrats must fight back.”
