Congresswoman Ramirez Statement on Reported Republicans Deep Cuts to Safety Net Programs
Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement:
“Back in May, Speaker Kevin McCarthy made a bipartisan debt ceiling deal with deep cuts and policies that hurt everyday people but with a promise to the American people that no further cuts would harm them. Today, Speaker McCarthy’s hunger for power and lack of leadership are leading him to back out of that deal and further cave into far-right Republicans' irrational demands to cut more than $150 billion per year for child care, education, medical research, and hundreds of other federal critical programs that feed families, provide safe housing, and protect our environment. These are unacceptable demands that I WILL NOT support.
While despicable Republican infighting and political theater push us closer to a hurtful Republican shutdown, I remain committed to protecting safety net programs and essential services, bringing federal resources back to the IL-03, and preventing further cuts that threaten the well-being of everyone in our communities. My Democrat colleagues and I urge six Republicans who will have the courage to prioritize their responsibility for the well-being of their constituents and help us honor the debt deal, avoid a shutdown, and bring forward a final omnibus that allows our government to keep providing for our communities."
