Congresswoman Ramirez Statement on Passage of Clean CR in Dem Effort to Avoid a Shutdown
Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement:
“The chaos of the last week made it clear that Republicans’ ineffective leadership was pushing us to a Republican Shutdown. I’ve been vocal about the importance of bringing forward a CLEAN Continuing Resolution (CR) to keep our government running and to continue bipartisan conversations about funding priorities. Over and over again, Speaker McCarthy ignored that call and gave in to the cruel and unreasonable demands from the most extreme members of his party.
“Yesterday, I raised my voice against a Republican Continuing Resolution that cut essential services and sought to deport unaccompanied children, end asylum, and jail families. I made a motion to recommit the CR to committee for proper bipartisan negotiation to avoid a 30% cut to services and safety nets for our communities. While the motion failed, my colleagues and I still defeated the extremist CR. That victory made the progress we are seeing today possible.
“With less than 24 hours to avoid a shutdown, Republicans presented another CR. Today’s CR provides us the opportunity to keep the government running for 45 days, without reckless 30% cuts to essential safety net programs for families and low-income communities and without hurtful provisions from H.R.2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023, which endangers and criminalizes immigrants and asylum seekers. We forced them to, at least momentarily, back down from their anti-immigrant demands and their cold disregard for working families.
“I voted YES on the resolution because this is a win for our communities. In good conscience, I couldn't let Republicans’ irresponsible political games push us to a shutdown. I am hopeful that we will also move forward critical relief for our allies abroad, including the people of Ukraine.
“I am committed to continuing the fight for an appropriations package that protects essential safety net programs and vital services, brings federal resources back to my district & the state of Illinois, and prevents further cuts that threaten the well-being of our communities.”
