Congresswoman Ramirez Statement in Opposition to Republican Priorities: Persecute Asylum Seekers, Promote War, Diminish Democracy

March 22, 2024

Washington, DC—Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement:

“We have avoided a shutdown. Thanks to the efforts of Democratic leadership and my democratic colleagues, families in IL-03 will have expanded access to affordable child care and early childhood education, reduced costs for prescribed medicine, and access to training opportunities for good-paying jobs. While this funding package protects our families from the harmful effects of a shutdown, it puts many of our most vulnerable neighbors at home and abroad at risk of harm, death, and disenfranchisement.

The funding package still reflects too many of the harmful and destructive extreme Republican priorities that facilitate death and destruction. The bill prioritizes funding for the militarization of the border, an expansion of detention and mass deportation, and punitive enforcement measures that have not proven to be effective over the last 30 years. It contains an increase of nearly $27 billion for the proliferation of war while cutting humanitarian aid by $3.4 billion. It defunds efforts to address attacks on our elections, undermining our democracy. I have been consistently opposed to these measures and stand opposed today.”
