Congresswoman Ramirez Statement on New Video Footage About the Death of Dexter Reed
Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement:
“New video evidence was released today about Humboldt Park neighbor Dexter Reed, who was tragically killed by police after being pulled over in a traffic stop for reportedly not wearing a seatbelt. Dexter’s death underscores how interactions with the police, even over minor offenses and traffic stops, can be incredibly dangerous for Black and Brown Chicagoans. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability must fully investigate Dexter’s murder. I look forward to the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability’s role in ensuring that accountability systems are working properly and that the community has a voice in guaranteeing justice is served. Swift transparency and accountability are needed for our communities to feel safe and protected.
Dexter was a beloved son, teammate, and young entrepreneur with a bright future. The outpouring from his friends, family, and basketball teammates makes it clear how much he was loved by his community. As we continue to fight for accountability and answers, we remember Dexter.”
