Congresswoman Ramirez Statement on Musk, Trump, Republicans Pushing for a National Shutdown

Washington, DC — Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03), the Vice Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee, released the following statement:

“Multibillionaire Elon Musk wants to shut down the government and destroy the foundations of our working-class families. Again, people who will not feel the painful impact of their choices are playing with our lives and livelihoods. Musk, Trump, and Speaker Johnson want to rob our constituents of the services, the pay, and the emergency resources they need and depend on, at the holidays, no less. Make no mistake: Musk, Trump, and Johnson will be just fine if they force a national shutdown. 

Let’s all remember the impacts of a shutdown on our families and communities: active duty and reserve armed forces personnel and federal employees will go without pay, TSA lines will be long, and seniors, veterans, and working families may see delays in their benefits. Without a disaster relief supplemental, Illinois stands to lose $2.6 billion that could help families and businesses rebuild and recover.

We have to ask ourselves what is important: we must deliver the bipartisan negotiated continuing resolution to the American people so that the services people depend on and the public servants that are the backbone of our communities have security and stability through the holidays. Greedy billionaires and Republican leadership are putting veterans, seniors, families, and everyday Americans in danger. We deserve better.”
