Congresswoman Ramirez Statement on the ICJ’s Order to Prevent Genocide in Gaza
Chicago, IL — Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement after the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the United Nations’ highest court, ruled that Israel must do all in its power to limit and prevent death, destruction, and any acts of genocide in Gaza. The decision also calls for Israel to ensure Gaza’s access to humanitarian aid.
“I hope for a day when our nation’s commitment to international law and human rights is indisputable on the world stage. Sadly, yesterday was not that day. While the ruling calls Israel to do all in its power to limit and prevent death, destruction, and any acts of genocide in Gaza, the U.S. must also confront our complicity in the International Court of Justice’s determination. Yesterday’s ruling affirms we must continue challenging our nation’s unconditional support for the Netanyahu administration. Ceasefire NOW.”
BACKGROUND:
On October 16, 2023, Congresswoman Ramirez joined Reps Cori Bush (MO-01), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), André Carson (IN-07), and Summer Lee (PA-12) to introduce H. Res. 786, the Ceasefire Now Resolution. The resolution urges the Biden Administration to call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Israel and occupied Palestine, and to send humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
