Congresswoman Ramirez Statement on Federal Indictment of Donald Trump Related to January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol and 2020 Election Results

Washington, DC — Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement regarding former president Donald J. Trump's four-count federal indictment for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and conspiring in the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol:

“It’s well-established that Donald Trump actively spearheaded the effort to undermine the American people and our democracy by scheming to violently overturn the 2020 election results. That such a sentence could describe our reality should be unthinkable. We are still to this day addressing the repercussions of his hateful, singular term in the White House. It is utterly unacceptable that this indictment is just the latest on a long list of felony counts. From willful retention of classified documents and obstruction of justice to conspiracy to defraud the United States, these actions describing anyone who has served as the President of the United States should be unimaginable. Today's indictment brings us one step closer to justice because no one is above the law, not even a former president. I am hopeful that Donald Trump facing justice in this case will allow our nation to move on from this dark chapter in our history and let us get back to the real work we should be focused on: building a stronger nation where all people can have what they need to thrive.”
