Congresswoman Ramirez Statement on Executive Order Eroding Asylum Seekers Rights

June 4, 2024

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement:

"Am I disappointed that today’s announcement erodes the rights of vulnerable asylum seekers in an act of deep political compromise? Of course I am.

Did I hope that the Biden administration would courageously reject Republican fearmongering and Trump-era policies to protect and defend the rights of asylum seekers? Of course I did.

We are facing a global crisis of displacement. Increased border security, expedited screening and repatriation, and arbitrary daily limits will not extinguish the hope or temper the desperation of the displaced. Ironically, during Immigrant Heritage Month, our nation’s leaders have compromised our commitment to protection for desperate families across the world and agreed to send them back to dangerous conditions after traumatic journeys. Republicans will tell you we are facing a crisis at our border. I argue we are facing a crisis of conscience. We should all be raising the alarm.”
