Congresswoman Ramirez Remains in DC Ready to Avert a Government Shutdown
With a looming shutdown, Congresswoman Ramirez is calling on the Senate to pass a 30-day continuing resolution
Washington, DC— After voting against a Republican Continuing Resolution, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) remains in DC, calling on the Democrats in the Senate to reject the Republican efforts to surrender all Congressional authority over to Musk and Trump. Ramirez believes the Senate and the House should pass a 30-day CR that averts a government shutdown and forces Republicans to negotiate with Democrats a budget that centers on working people.
“I am in DC. I’m ready to vote tonight, tomorrow, or Friday to pass a 4-week extension and negotiate a working people’s budget,” tweeted Congresswoman Ramirez. “Republicans, the ball is in your court.”
Ramirez released a full video statement after voting against the CR. Click here to watch. To read the full transcript, click here.

Republicans' full-year CR gives Elon Musk and Donald Trump the expanded authority to make decisions about the funds appropriated by Congress without guardrails or red lines. The CR resolution does not include the direction needed to protect the services and programs Americans rely on and to affirm the separation of power in our democracy. Republicans have not proposed a clean CR. While laying the groundwork to dismantle Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, the resolution:
- Eliminates $23 billion in veteran benefits and zeros the Toxic Exposure Fund, which takes care of veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, and other toxins. It could affect the 1,090 IL03 veterans waiting for their PACT Act benefits in IL-03.
- Cuts more than $700 million in rent assistance for low-income and working Americans, forcing the eviction of more than 32,00 households, including veterans, survivors of domestic violence, seniors, and families with disabilities.
- Slashes $2 billion in congressionally funded projects, including $12.8 for 15 projects in IL-03, to improve the safety of airports, railways, roads, and ports across the nation.
- Reduces over $280 million from the National Institutes for Health’s budget, endangering research for cancer, heart disease, maternal health, diabetes, and so much more.
- Remove $20 million from the Emergency Food Program, leaving up to 25,000 seniors unable to participate in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program.
