Congresswoman Ramirez Files Resolution Celebrating the Groundbreaking Contributions of Latinas
In a time when Latinas - and all women - are under attack, Congresswoman Ramirez honors the essential leadership women contribute to our communities
Washington, DC—Today, in observation of Women’s History Month, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) re-introduced a resolution recognizing the cultural, economic, and political contributions of Latinas in the State of Illinois, Illinois’ Third Congressional District, and the nation.
“Latinas in elected office across the IL-03 are holding it down for our communities. At a time when Latino communities across the nation are experiencing profound fear and uncertainty, our elected Latina leaders are protecting our families, advocating for just policies, and organizing to meet the needs of our constituents,” said Congresswoman Ramirez, the first and only Latina elected to represent the Midwest in Congress. “We stand on the shoulders of mothers, madrinas, hermanas, mentors, and unsung heroines who have championed us. Latinas are marking history in their own capacity—whether it be in politics, the private sector, or in our communities. There is no doubt: las latinas estamos construyendo nuestro futuro y fortaleciendo nuestra democracia.”
The resolution affirms that the work of Latinas at all levels of government in the State of Illinois has resulted in:
- the codification of women’s rights
- the expansion of health care for undocumented people,
- the strengthening of a multicultural, multigenerational movement that acknowledges the shared humanity of others, and more.
“While my resolution honors the persistence and resilience of Latinas poderosas, starting with my own mother Maria Elvira Ramirez, I acknowledge the diverse, rainbow coalition of women leaders who are fighting in the streets, in every level of government, and in the courts for all women’s equity and parity” said Congresswoman Ramirez. “Whether it is the 125 women in Congress or the broader coalition of women Democrats in Illinois’ Third Congressional District, women are at the forefront of the fight for working families!”
The resolution resolves that the House of Representatives:
- celebrate the impact and contributions of Latinas in the State of Illinois;
- acknowledge the value of Latinas and the essential role they play in the Nation’s multicultural, multigenerational democracy; and
- recognize the importance of accurate data about Latinas and the role the Census Bureau plays in delivering data that impacts the political and economic power, influence, and well-being of Latinas.
Ramirez presented the reintroduction of the resolution during a Women in Leadership event on Friday, March 7. The event convened women elected officials, community organizers, and non-profit leaders serving Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District.
