Congresswoman Ramirez Defends Texans, Illinois Standing for Democracy

August 4, 2025

Chicago, IL— Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement regarding Texas Democrats seeking refuge in Illinois after Texas Republicans released a redistricting plan backed by Trump. The plan would strip Black and Brown communities in Texas of Congressional representation to expand Republicans’ majority in Congress.

“I’ve repeatedly echoed my constituents' demand that Democrats stop being the ‘minority party’ and, in turn, become the opposition party to challenge the blatantly authoritarian agenda being enacted across our country. Authoritarians will consolidate power by any means. And it is our obligation to resist them at every turn with every tool at our disposal.

As Texas Republicans carry out Trump’s authoritarian, undemocratic, white supremacist orders to strip our communities of their right to Congressional representation, I am proud of the Texas state lawmakers who have taken a stand to defend our communities. My state, Illinois, and people across the nation who seek a more representative, more inclusive, more equitable democracy stand with them.

Illinois is a welcoming state, clear of the ideals of democracy and the value of our Constitution. I am ready to provide the representatives from Texas with the support they need. We will fight back to defend our democratic institutions and our voting rights from Trump’s assaults. We will not bow down to a wanna-be-king. We stand opposed.”
