Ramirez Statement on Republican Government Shutdown

Washington, DC—Today, Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) released the following statement:

“Over the last 9 months,  Donald Trump, the administration, and Congressional Republicans have been clear about their priorities and the pain they are willing to inflict on the American people to benefit their billionaire bosses. And today, that pain is only deepened as Americans wake up in a devastating government shutdown because Republicans refused to do their jobs. 

For months, I’ve been clear that I would not fund authoritarianism or support our country’s descent into fascism. The Republican CR only further enables the harm of the Trump Administration. It fuels the healthcare crisis, unlawful recissions, attacks on workers’ rights, family separation, the militarization of our cities, and increasing costs for American families. I will not betray working families by supporting a budget or a resolution that deepens the harm we are enduring or makes the rich richer while they terrorize our communities. 

Republicans control the White House and Congress. The shutdown is a result of their inaction. I am in DC, ready to work. If Republicans want my vote, they will need to come back to Congress and work with Democrats to repair the harm they have done to working people.”
